The Centre was officially launched in March 2011 to facilitate the cooperation between the Namibia University of Science and Technology (NUST), industry, commerce and the public sector to enhance learning, which includes work-based and service learning, liaison with industry, partnerships, research, development, as well the formation of advisory committees. It therefore forms an integral part of the curriculum development and implementation as well as informing the teaching and learning strategy of NUST. The Vision for Cooperative Education at NUST
The Namibia University of Science and Technology was established in November 1994, by Act 33 of Parliament, as a tertiary education institution with the mandate to:
> Provide post-secondary career-education;
> Provide continuing education;
> Conduct applied research;
> Develop equal opportunities in respect of educational programmes; and
> Provide an effective collegial governance structure.
The mandate to provide career-oriented education is facilitated through the implementation of the institutional curriculum framework which makes specific reference to the following Namibia University of Science and Technology graduate outcomes:the
> Technical and/or professional and/or subject knowledge and the application thereof for the purpose of furthering a career or engaging in economic activity in a particular field of expertise.
> Critical thinking.
> Problem solving.
> Good Communication Skills in English and another language if required.
> Culturally sensitive global and responsible citizenship.
> Engaged community membership.
Given the profile and mandate for career-oriented education, graduate outcomes, reputation for quality and focus of the NUST, the Cooperative Education Unit (CEU) compliments the institutional vision and specific implementation of the Curriculum Framework through the application of an integrated approach to teaching and learning for the attainment of qualifications. It specifically encourages and enhances learning partnerships/relationships between the Namibia University of Science and Technology, industry and the students, nationally and internationally.
This integrated approach to teaching and learning, positions the Namibia University of Science and Technology favourably to address the challenges contained in the changing higher education landscape, the current dynamic socio-economic and technological advancements, and the concomitant requirements thereof. In particular, the changing profiles and demographics of students and workers, resulting in new demands require a responsive university. Consistent with the Namibia University of Science and Technology’s vision to educate leaders for the new economy and its mission to promote national competitiveness by providing multiple opportunities for excellent education, applied research, innovation and service, it is CEU’s strategic objective to facilitate and coordinate the implementation of cooperative education at the Namibia University of Science and Technology.
Cooperative Education Unit at the Namibia University of Science and Technology will serve as a leading model of relevant, high quality higher education through collaboration with stakeholders to actively contribute towards a skilled workforce in a future orientated Namibia. Thus, educating leaders to realise both Vision 2030 and lead the skills transformation for the Namibian economy.
